The Trial of a Time Lord

THE DOCTOR AND HIS TARDIS ARE TAKEN OUT OF time and drawn into a vast space station. This is the location of an inquiry designed to investigate the Doctor’s actions, which are alleged to include transgressing the First Law of Time and conduct unbecoming a Time Lord.

The tribunal comprises the Inquisitor, the 15 most important Time Lord jurists, and the Valeyard or ‘learned Court Prosecutor’. The Valeyard uses the Matrix to screen two edited examples of the Doctor’s hazardous and erratic interference in the lives of others. The first is set on a primitive world known as Ravalox and the next is on Thoros-Beta, the planet of the Mentors.

As the proceedings continue, the Valeyard requests that the inquiry should be elevated to a full trial and that the death penalty should be invoked if the Doctor is found guilty. At the conclusion of the third portion of evidence, submitted in his defence by the Doctor from his own future, the Valeyard accuses the Doctor of genocide, following his destruction of the Vervoid creatures aboard the Hyperion III space liner.

About Doctor Who Magazine

The Doctor’s own people, and his home planet, were introduced in 1969 as a major chapter in the series’ history came to an end. Five decades later, the Time Lords and their devastating war with the Daleks are still essential parts of Doctor Who’s mythology. This special publication analyses every story set on Gallifrey, reveals previously unseen images from the making of the episodes and interviews key players in the Time Lords’ fascinating story.
