Electronic Sound  |  Issue 102
There’s always been something distinctly radiant and euphoric about the music of Alison Goldfrapp, this month’s cover star. She worked with Orbital and Tricky in the early days of her career, before forming the hugely successful electronic duo Goldfrapp with Will Gregory in 1999, delivering Kraftwerk-meets-glam stomps such as ‘Strict Machine’ and ‘Ooh La La’ over the next two decades. Six years after the last Goldfrapp release, she’s now striking out on her own with ‘The Love Invention’, a late-career solo album that sees her fully re-energised and artistically reborn.
While it’s no surprise that it nods to her previous work with Will, ‘The Love Invention’ is very much a record on Alison’s own terms – a synthpop album with added oomph, the anthemic tracks rooted in the electro and house music influences that have always been part of her DNA. From the upfront disco moves of the title cut to the acid house sensuality of ‘So Hard So Hot’, it’s a heady statement of intent that reflects an artist revelling in her own confidence.
“As an artist, I think that it’s important to feel excited about what you’re doing,” she tells writer Dave Simpson in our cover feature. “And I’m incredibly excited about what I’m doing.” As listeners, we should be excited as well. ‘The Love Invention’ is a big and gloriously effervescent record that’s set to soundtrack the summer months ahead.
