Forking through soil will relieve compaction, allow rain to soak in and create a crumbly structure
Relieve surface compaction in your borders by forking through the gaps. Work backwards so that you don’t tread where you’ve been and just use the points of the tines to lift the top 3-4cm of soil.
This will aerate the surface, which, in turn, helps to warm up the soil.
Take out any weeds as you go and thin out any self-seeders, particularly along the edges. Be careful not to damage any bulbs that are coming through. It’s also a good time to follow it up with a layer of compost mulch.
