Paintings of the Northeast might bring to mind craggy seaside castles, blustery moors and wide-open spaces. None of the above feature at the brand-new Mining Art Gallery, set in a former bank in the one-time mining town of Bishop Auckland. Here, a rich seam of artwork focuses on the landscapes below the surface of County Durham – featuring heroic miners, bottomless mine shafts and claustrophobic tunnels. It’s part of a project to revitalise the town – look out for the reopening of next-door Auckland Castle in spring 2018.
