Antwerp in Belgium waves goodbye to summer with the three-day Us by Night festival on the last weekend in September (usbynight.be). Dockland warehouses by the Scheldt River become a hive of international artists and designers, accompanied by a ‘night market’ to please all punters with food courts, craft beers and cocktails, arcade games and the possibility of heading home sporting a spontaneous tattoo.
If warmer temperatures linger, Pakt is an especially enticing space to spend time in (pakt-antwerpen.be). Another former warehouse complex, this time in the Groen Kwartier southeast of Antwerp’s historic centre, it has morphed over the past two years into a maze of rooftop gardens and greenhouses (pictured), with restaurants, cafés and other businesses setting up behind the weathered brick walls.
