This week we travel back all the way to around 1863 and a shooting and fishing party at Ardtornish House. Pictured left to right are Benjamin Leigh Smith (1828-1913), a cousin of Florence Nightingale and famous Arctic explorer who donated plant specimens to the Royal Botanic Gardens and brought home live polar bears for the London Zoo; Dr Edward Hamilton, a regular sporting guest at Ardtornish between 1866 and 1879; Harriet Smith (nee Cook) and William Smith (1828-1899), husband of Harriet and son of Octavius Henry Smith, owner of Ardtornish estate; and Thomas Cobb (sitting with gun), the well-known English landscape painter. Thanks to Iain Thornber for the photograph.
