They say horror has many faces and that’s certainly true of Capcom’s long-running series. Boldly inviting you to “Enter the world of survival horror”, Capcoms’ first Resident Evil game became a huge success on Sony’s PlayStation and highlighted just how far the medium was progressing. Known as Biohazard in Japan (the series’ convoluted plot revolves around the T-Virus), it spawned several sequels and became synonymous with survival horror in the process. Just as the T-Virus would mutate the series’ antagonists into ever-more grotesque forms, so too would the series change, first with the groundbreaking Resident Evil 4, then later with the first-person perspective of Resident Evil 7. Just like the residents of Spencer Mansion, Capcom would conduct its own experiments, letting the mainline series shoot off into numerous different genres – from lightgun games to chaotic multiplayer shooters – with varying degrees of success.
