Scull & Sweep, a small New England based rowing apparel and accessories brand, has re-interpreted the traditional rowing blazer in a modern, versatile and technically innovative silhouette. The result is a blazer that is aesthetically sharp, scores high marks for comfort and functionality and is unlike anything you have seen before. The Scull & Sweep team were inspired by the origins of the first blazers to emerge in the 19th Century as protective outer garments that were actually worn while rowing. With modern tailoring, an athletic fit, technically advanced materials, and innovative pops of high-vis colour (a subtle nod to Scull & Sweep’s promotion of on-water visibility), the Regatta Blazer is a welcome modern take on the idea.
Wearing them for ourselves at Henley Royal Regatta (HRR) this summer - the spiritual birth place of the rowing blazer - they certainly did not look out of place. The breathability and light weight we found particularly welcome in the warm weather. They passed the scrutiny of the notoriously diligent HRR security who enforce a strict dress code within the Stewards Enclosure and perhaps most usefully, when no longer required, the blazers can be packed away neatly into a pocket or handbag.
