If you’re one of the people who rolled their eyes at the prospect of a Lamborghini SUV, be prepared. We got our hands on an Urus recently – and, being the sensible types we like to think we are, we took it green laning.

It got some comments, we can tell you that. And it was definitely a hit on the school run. Now all we need is a couple of hundred grand. Watch out for the Editor trying to carve out a new career for himself as a grime artist any time now…

Incredibly, the Urus is not the most expensive vehicle in 4x4 this month. The Torsus Overlander is basically a MAN truck that’s been turned in to a fully fitted motorhome – it’ll go on sale next year, and it’s one of the most spectacular expedition vehicles we’ve ever seen. And while it might cost as much as a house, it’ll hold its value like one too. Retirement: sorted.

We’re also featuring two very different military 4x4s this month. One is a Lightweight Land Rover that’s been fettled and modded into a daily driver that’s also a hardcore off-road plaything – a true old-school Half-Tonner like they used to be in the days before the became classic cars.

And talking of classic cars, our other military feature this month is on an ex-army Mercedes G-Wagen that’s been rebuilt by Legacy Overland into a stunning cruiser combining modern-day comforts with bags of heritage.
It’s as much of an off-road legend as ever, too – and in its post-resto state it’s all set for another quarter of a century.

The second part of our catalogue of destinations for globe-trotting adventure appears this month, too, focusing on Africa and the Middle East. And talking of Africa, there’s only one place in the world where you can meet mountain gorillas in their natural habitat – and just getting there is an adventure in itself…

Since lockdown, there has been a huge growth in the number of people getting into camping, the outdoors and enjoying an off-grid lifestyle. More and more, as a society we want to get away. Away from the relentlessness of a working life that has increasingly invaded our homes; away from the tyranny of always-on electronics and ever-watchful social media; away from the pressure to be busy, to be productive, to be available.

When your every waking hour is spent feeling hunted, just disappearing into the countryside for the weekend is a blessed relief. And if you’re in a 4x4, you can disappear further away and deeper into it. Overlander 4x4 reflects Britain’s new-found interest in an outdoor lifestyle.

We’re not a magazine about camping, but a magazine about the sort of adventures that involve it. Primarily, we focus on overlanding – showcasing both trip-of-a-lifetime expeditions as well as adventures that are more modest and, for most of us, more attainable. As always with anything four-wheel drive, it’s going to be a journey worth making, so join us for the adventure.

As a subscriber you'll receive the following benefits:

•  A discount off the RRP of your magazine
•  Your magazine delivered to your device each month
•  You'll never miss an issue
•  You’re protected from price rises that may happen later in the year

You'll receive 13 issues during a 1 year Overlander 4X4 magazine subscription.

Note: Digital editions do not include the covermount items or supplements you would find with printed copies.
