The structure and function of our bodies depend on proteins. Protein is an important component of every cell in the body. The name comes from the Greek word proteos, meaning ‘primary’ or ‘first place’.
We sometimes take it for granted that our wonderful bodies just ‘do stuff’ all the time. One of the keys to operating of the body is the heart. It beats about 101,000 times a day, about 3 billion times in a lifetime, and over that time it’ll pump 800 million pints of blood. 100,000 chemical reactions occur in the human brain every second and you breathe about 23,000 times a day. These are just some of the many things that make your body absolutely amazing — and it couldn’t do any of it without proper proteins. In fact the regulation of the body’s cells, tissues, and organs cannot happen without them.
