Around the year 1999 (I can’t remember the exact day — I am so jealous of those who can celebrate their veganniversary, because it is truly a celebration of a new life) I saw a video of a horse going to slaughter. They were being pushed out of a truck, and then something horrific was done to the horse, that I felt was taken out of a horror movie — and it suddenly clicked. I stopped eating animals and became vegetarian right then. I started volunteering at dog and cat shelters, making T-shirt designs to raise money for them, and I started participating in protests for animal rights and against fur and wool. As well as all of this, I co-created the first vegetarian and vegan online forum in Spain, called GreenPeach.
It wasn’t until 2010 that things truly became clear and I went vegan, when I realised that the dairy and egg industries are just as bad as the meat and leather industries. I also realised that bees suffer so much abuse for a sweetener that is not essential to our lives, but is essential for theirs — honey. Veganism is a constant learning process. I am now at a period in my life where I am continuously learning new and more effective ways to help animals, the environment and our planet.
