For those unfamiliar with the game of apple bobbing often played on Halloween, it involves filling a large bowl or tub with water and placing apples into it. As the apples are not as dense as the water, they float to the surface.
Apple bobbing’s origin is fairly unknown, but stories date it back to the Roman invasion of Britain, when they brought with them the apple tree and worship of Pomona, the goddess of fruitful abundance. Other accounts date the tradition back to pre-Christian times and the pagan festival of Samhain.
