Whilst there are many pastimes that have fallen victim to the current public health crisis, creative writing isn’t one of them. Writing is an activity that lends itself to a domestic environment and can take place whilst on your own or with others. It doesn’t require any specific tools other than those you already have at home. If not having sufficient time to improve a skill; enter competitions; write a short story, poem, or make a start on that novel you’ve been threatening to write for years, is your usual problem, you are likely to have more of that precious resource at the moment. So why not deploy an antiseptic wipe on your keyboard – look at it closely I dare you – engage your freshly washed hands in legitimate activity and allow your love of writing to help you beat the bug.
You might want to consider your writing aims and what you’d like to achieve. However, be realistic; these are tricky times so be gentle with yourself. It might be that you want to write as a distraction and remember, the best reason for writing is because it’s fun, but if you do want to develop your skills, now could be a good time. For example, you might feel that you need to learn or improve certain techniques. There are lots of good online creative writing courses that focus on specific areas of writing, and Writing Magazine offers a wide range. If you prefer to attend an actual class when normality resumes, do some research and find a course that meets your requirements in terms of cost, level, topic and location.
