AQUILA is a UK print magazine aiming to be ‘Intelligent reading for 8 to 12 year-olds’. The attractively illustrated monthly magazine features challenging articles and puzzles on themes of science, history and general knowledge.
Writers need to be aware that: ‘The content is designed to appeal to bright children who are confident and independent readers.’ Back issues are available from the website. The team seek ‘cool science and intriguing puzzles’, exciting ideas, articles which are different, funny, dynamic, entertaining with ‘the core of (the) concept’ well explained. Writers should be well organised and understand that ‘articles and stories are planned up to a year in advance.’ Themes for the coming year are posted on the website each September and ‘most non-fiction is commissioned by the end of November’. Fiction is selected in the summer.
