FIVE-STAR CAR
Skoda Superb
It suggests unusual faith in nominative determinism to call your product the Superb. Indeed, for most of the history of Skoda’s large saloon and estate car, the SurprisinglyDecent would perhaps have been more apt. The Superb is now into its fourth generation, and you might say that faith has paid off because it is now good enough to earn the full five stars in the Autocar road test.
Of course, real credit goes to Skoda’s design philosophy and its engineering team, which has taken a much more prominent role within the wider Volkswagen Group in recent years.
Instead of just taking existing VW Group parts and adapting them for use in its cars, as Skoda has done – with notable success – for many years, Skoda engineers actually led the development for the Superb and its VW Passat sibling, allowing them to create a car that’s more inherently ‘Skoda’ than ever before.
