MY WEEK IN CARS

Luca de Meo has been a charismatic and shrewd leader in the car world
MONDAY
I’m so disappointed in Luca de Meo. His decision to quit the top job at the Renault Group has left me feeling bereft, not least because over the years – at Toyota, Fiat-Alfa-Abarth, VW, Seat and finally Renault and Alpine – I’ve got to know him quite well and seen him as the ultimate car guy. For me, he has been Europe’s last really great car leader. De Meo has often been lauded for combining passion with a gimlet eye for balance sheets but, having seen him in so many roles, I’m convinced his truest strength is confident, charismatic leadership, the same kind wielded by Stellantis’s Carlos Tavares until the job overcame him.
