Where’s a good place to spend a wintry day? A cosy tearoom, perhaps? It would certainly keep you warm, but what about a trip to the beach? Head to the coast during the winter months and you might discover that time by the sea, even in the middle of the chilliest season, is incredibly rewarding. Without the summer crowds, coastlines all over the world transform into tranquil spots to while away the hours. You may have to wrap up, but any winter adventure outdoors will be life-enriching and good for the soul.

It doesn’t matter, either, if gloomy clouds lurk above, a howling wind is making its presence known and waves are crashing on the shore. This serves only to emphasise the wonders of nature and makes a wild rugged setting all the more enthralling. Beaches often appear calm rather than chaotic throughout winter, despite the weather. And if you choose your destination carefully, preferably at low tide, vast stretches of sand will also reveal themselves.
