FJORDS AND WHERE TO FIND THEM
Norway might be the first country that springs to mind when it comes to fjords, but there are plenty of other locations where these geological wonders can be found. Here and over the page are just a few
Doubtful Sound, New Zealand
(Below) Sometimes called the ‘Sound of Silence’, with a length of 40km, this is the second longest of the South Island’s fjords, and the deepest, at 421m. It was named by Captain James Cook, who decided not to sail into its inlet because he thought it looked narrow and was anxious for the safety of his ship. There are a total of 14 fjords on South Island, carved around 20,000 years ago when glaciers retreated at the end of the last glacial period.
