Breathe  |  Issue 082
Looking at the news, it can be easy to forget how connected we all are. Things that friends, family and strangers say and do directly affect how you think and feel. A raised voice, a nod of the head, a roll of the eyes – these sorts of connections are happening all the time, between parents and children, between friends, between couples, even between random people standing in a queue or sharing a bus. This intricate, invisible web of nudges, prompts and gestures binds us together.
It also gives you a special power to influence others. A gentle touch of the arm, a smile, a compliment – small acts of kindness can be deeply impactful. They offer a simple way to positively affect the people around you, as well as yourself. And they leave lasting ripples. You might never see the end of the chain reaction, but a kind word can shape someone’s day and how they interact with the next person.
Studies have also shown that the more compassion you show others, the more you notice it. Your focus shifts outwards, and you spot someone holding a door open, helping with a heavy bag, offering to give up a seat. You take a moment to appreciate that rush of warmth when you receive a message of solidarity from a friend. Compassion is a path to strengthening your faith in people, in the world and yourself. However bad things get, you know that kindnesses are still happening.
As you go about your everyday, then, making decisions on what to say or how to react, you might ask: what is the kindest choice? Set an intention for compassion and commit to a daily action that uplifts another, however small. A sweet note of encouragement, the surprise of a swept floor, an unexpected cup of tea – send a message of kindness, and watch it ripple.
