8 TIPS FOR YOUR WINDOWS & GLAZING
A key element of any self build, here’s how to choose the right style and spec for your abode
Doors and windows will form an important part of your building’s facade, both in terms of functionality and style. Your glazing choices will contribute to the thermal performance of your home, as well as add value and kerb appeal. Plus, bringing in daylight has an important link to health and wellbeing. Here are the main things to think about.
1 Analyse the site
Many self builders aim to maximise natural daylight in their homes, as well as gain free heat from the sun in the cooler months. Your architect can perform a site analysis, assessing the sun’s path across your plot. “The ideal is to have a north-to-south home, with the majority of your glazing looking out to the rear elevation and soaking up the most sun,” says Absolute Architecture’s Kate Cooper.
2 Think about positioning
Sometimes, there will be obvious site constraints – a view to the north, perhaps, or the road in a position that shows a clear approach to the house. “In that case, rather than having a whole wall of glass, you might be a bit more selective about how to expose that view,” says Kate. One alternative route to bringing in natural light is high-level or top-down glazing, such as cleverly placed rooflights. Clerestory windows at the top of walls are also great for maintaining privacy. Large picture windows, meanwhile, will perfectly capture a garden view.
