Air source heat pumps explained
Eco expert Nigel Griffiths takes a closer look at this popular self build heating option

In the drive towards greener energy, the government is putting more emphasis on air source heat pumps (ASHPs) as an alternative to gas boilers. Powered by electricity, this renewable tech functions in a similar way to a fridge, but in reverse. A fanpowered system comprising a special coil is installed outside the house. Warmth in the air is absorbed by fluid inside the coil, which passes through a compressor to boost its temperature. This energy warms a cylinder, which then supplies your water-based heat emitters (underfloor heating or radiators) and domestic hot water. Here, I’ll be exploring the basics you need to know to ensure you specify a system that runs efficiently.
