The house at street level
The house looks practically invisible from the roadside, with only a small proportion visible at street level. The Laings find that visitors seem surprised when the house reveals itself as they enter the front door. “The property can’t be seen from the rear, meaning it’s not overlooked”, says Andrew. “Since we built into the hillside, nestling among the river, trees and hills in the background, it’s incredibly quiet. Although we’re only four miles or so from the centre of Edinburgh, we feel like we’re living in the countryside – it really does feel like the best of both worlds.”
