”Good luck with whatever they do… I think they’re trying to get a new lead singer and I wish whoever is the new lead singer and the band the best of luck” – Tony Hadley on his former bandmates
Spandau Ballet never experienced their own version of ‘my drugs hell’. But they did like a drink. To that end, they even went on tour with a tequila shot kit housed in a flight case, which they dubbed The Slammer.
Usually, Hadley was careful to not get too involved in the band’s carousing. “You’ve got to do an hour-and-half to two hours on stage and there were always a lot of shows, a lot of travelling. If you’ve got to do that amount of singing, you can’t go to a nightclub. So, more often than not, I’d have a couple of beers at the bar, they’d all go off to a nightclub, and I’d be, ‘All right, see you tomorrow lads, I’ve got to get some sleep’. You have to look after your voice because you’ve got a responsibility.”
