Reflecting on the past is essential for helping us learn from our experiences, and coming to terms with what’s happened to us. But when you spend too much time mentally rehashing past events, it becomes rumination – one of the most destructive habits for our mental wellbeing. ‘When we ruminate, we start to make up stories,’ says psychotherapist Rachel Shattock Dawson (therapyonthames.co.uk). ‘So, instead of simply reflecting on why a relationship didn’t work out, we think, “This always happens to me”, then start to predict the future, “I will never meet anyone”.
