LOVE for the SOIL

After taking voluntary redundancy in 2009, Andrew Davenport found himself free to follow his dream of starting his own gardening business. He now runs Gardener’s Cottage, an organic garden and nursery in the North East of England

A diverse range of planting attracts pollinators in the B & B border (bee and butterfly border)

Gardener’s Cottage is situated in the quiet rural hamlet of Bingfield, 25 miles from Newcastle upon Tyne. Over the last 15 years, since my wife and I moved here, the quarter-acre plot has evolved to become an organic and sustainably run garden and nursery providing an income as well as growing our own vegetables, fruit and herbs.

Initially, back in the early 2000s, I was working as an electrical engineer in the construction industry with the dream of one day ‘getting out’ and running my own gardening business. A passion for composting and some serious research into the QR (Quick Return) composting method resulted in the writing of a book, Quick Return Compost Making, in 2008.This was the start of a ‘greener’ existence to come.
