A THREE-YEAR, £100,000 project has uncovered 30 underwater shipwrecks and 10 more along the shore on Scotland’s west coast from Cape Wrath to the Solway Firth, writes Sandy Neil.
Project SAMPHIRE, funded by The Crown Estate, worked by ‘crowd-sourcing’ information about possible archaeological sites in the marine environment through face-to-face meetings with harbour masters, scallop divers, recreational divers, fishermen and other residents in the towns and villages of the west coast.
The locations identified were recorded before the most promising were visited by volunteer and professional archaeological divers to verify the information.
