There is so much vibrancy and interest to be enjoyed in the autumn garden. At this time of year, the light is softer and the garden becomes naturally more subdued, yet a few key flowers added to pots and borders will extend the growing season and brighten up your mood until the beginning of winter. From stunning annuals to reliable perennials, there is a wonderful variety of different autumn flowers to explore.
In particular, there is much pleasure to be had from container gardening at this time of year. The beauty of pots is that they can be positioned for best advantage, and then over-wintered or stored away once the season is over. Don’t overlook the importance of investing in the right containers. Use the largest you can afford, in terms of cost and space, as fewer bigger pots are more effective than lots of smaller ones. Keep them close to the house so you can easily access them in colder weather. Window boxes and hanging baskets also offer excellent opportunities to add colour at eye level.
