Primarily a utilitarian art form, folk art isn’t beholden to the rules applied to the formal arts as there is no standard of quality set – it is largely down to pieces being made by, and for, ‘ordinary’ people. Indeed, at the time of their creation, they weren’t considered art.
Delightfully naive in character, folk art has been made for an undefined amount of time, with most countries having their own distinctive look. It wasn’t until post 1945 that people in the UK began to appreciate it as art.
