Marylebone pronunciation
PETER Scott tells us (RM Oct, p49) that the Marylebone station announcers pronounce the name ‘Marryb’n’, but that doesn’t make it correct.
I agree with him that the Bakerloo Line announcements of ‘Marleybone’ must be wrong.
But ‘Marryb’n’ sounds wrong, too: how can it be right to leave out the middle ‘le’?
The name originates from the church of St Mary at the (le in French) Bourn (or stream). I was brought up to pronounce it ‘Maryleb’n’, which tries to be more correct (closer to the original) than the other two.
