A track on 1972’s debut Can’t Buy A Thrill, it includes Jimmy Page’s favourite guitar solo, nailed by guest guitarist Elliott Randall in just two takes – the engineer having missed the first one.
RANDALLIN’ MAN
A self-deprecating man of easy charm and enormous musical talent, Elliott Randall learned piano from the age of five, went to school with Laura Nyro and Michael Kamen, and by the time he was 16 was gigging around the Greenwich Village folk circuit in a trio with Richie Havens.
Becoming friends with Jimi Hendrix, he heeded Hendrix’s warnings about being out-front and famous, and preferred to stay in supporting roles, finding work with a roster of stars including Carly Simon, the Doobie Brothers and Peter Frampton as well as Steely Dan. He has also done development and programming work for Yamaha, Akai and Roland. Now 75 and living in London, when he’s not lecturing he can be found back in the theatre orchestra pit, with a recent booking being for the 50th-anniversary shows for the renowned hippie musical Hair.
