Issue Cover

Climber  |  Sep/Oct21

Welcome to another issue of Climber. First up, a mention and congratulations to our interviewee in this issue, James McHaffie, the first climber to tick Ken Wilson’s iconic book Extreme Rock. Such a remarkable achievement when you think about not only the locations around the UK involved but the upper grades too – E9 and F8b anyone?
I’ve been spending a lot of time in the Lake District, often in the company of Lakes legend Nick Wharton, whilst taking photographs for upcoming guides produced by the Fell & Rock Climbing Club. It can be a frustrating time personally as, whilst I love photographing people in such a stunning landscape, I often have to forgot the opportunity to climb these fabulous routes, concentrating solely on getting the right shot. However, it is nice to actually climb something once in a while and on the particular day we went to Runestone Quarry (featured in this issue) we had been up since early morning taking photographs at Blind Tarn Crag, a super crag around to the left of Dow Crag. Given we had fi nished before midday we chucked around a few ideas and a visit to Runestone won through. Granted sport climbing isn’t everyone’s cup of tea but I loved it and, in particular, the location and aspect – there aren’t may UK quarries with such a view. The climbing is good too.
Elsewhere, Graham Hoey writes about the process behind writing
a guidebook to arguably the UK’s most popular area, the Peak District. Having written and edited guides to the Peak, I have an affinity with this and the hard work and dedication needed. I was pretty fortunate in having a strong team of climbers behind me who all volunteered to help with route checking, writing section, etc. that helped in a big way.
