There’s one big reason to be disappointed with the new Dell XPS 13. In the US, where it was launched to compete with Apple’s MacBook Neo, you can buy the basic model for $699 (£520). In the UK, it’s available to students and educators for £699, and £899 to everyone else.
Handled our typical daily work tasks without any problems
However, this still represents good value for what is essentially a premium laptop in every respect apart from its price. It’s 12.7mm thick and weighs 1kg, making it even slimmer and lighter than the Neo. You can barely feel it in your backpack yet its aluminium chassis feels sturdy. It opens up one-handed, thanks to the lip at the front of the lid, while the keyboard deck gives you just enough space to type on comfortably. The touchpad is big enough for accurate tracking across the laptop’s 13.4in screen.
