Park Primary School has ditched all homework except reading in a bid ‘to improve classroom engagement’. Parents will now choose if and how much is done at home. However, reading will still be required.
Argyll and Bute Council said a study showed that levels of pupil engagement in classroom activities increased when homework was removed from the curriculum. Teachers will send home information along with suggested learning, which will not need to be handed in.
In a letter to parents, the school said: ‘this way you will have a choice as to how much additional learning you want to do with your child and you can organise this around your child’s extra-curricular activities, family events, etc. We must stress that reading homework will continue to be set as this is an integral part of your child’s education and we ask that you continue to encourage your child to read as much as possible.’
