Mythology provides a background to the fundamental understanding that exists within a culture, and becomes a device for explaining the inexplicable. It also gives a rich supply of material to the poets of every age and tradition. Many writers are fascinated by it, and Elizabeth Horrocks of Wilmslow, Cheshire is no stranger to the subject.
‘I often write myth and legend poems – about Arthur, mermaids and so on, but this is the first with a mythology I invented!’ she comments. She goes on to describe how this piece was conceived in a workshop. The trigger was a toy ‘diamond’, and she looked beyond the plastic trinket to produce her poem.
