April FIVE GOOD THINGS TO DO
1 Book…
…tickets to see The Guernsey Literary and Potato Peel Pie Society, out on 20 April. First it was a bestselling book and now it’s a film, with cast including Lily James (right), Matthew Goode and Penelope Wilton. It’s a (fictional) story of life on Guernsey during the German occupation in World War II (not fictional). Times were hard and food was scarce – hence the potato peel pies. It will be interesting to see how the book’s format (a series of letters) translates to the big screen.

…First Catch: Study of a Spring Meal (£16.99; Hardie Grant) by rising-star chef and food writer Thom Eagle. There’s a slew of books that plough a similar furrow, but not to the standard of this collection of cloth-bound musings. The topics he covers range from the boiling of veg to cooking with blood… Really, it’s compelling!
