Sony launches RX1R III
Updated compact features 61MP full-frame sensor from the A7R V, and the 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens from its predecessor, and gets new Creative Looks for stills and video
1 61MP FULL-FRAME SENSOR The RX1R III has the same back-side illuminated sensor as Sony’s A7R V and A7C R. 2 FIXED 35MM F2 LENS A Zeiss Sonnar T*, it’s the same one that was used in the Sony RX1R II. 3 NO MORE POP-UP EVF The latest version of the RX1R uses a fixed blackout-free viewfinder instead.
SLEEK DESIGN The top of the RX1R III is flat. It also houses Sony’s Multi-Interface Shoe.
TACTILE CONTROLS The PASM dial and exposure compensation dial both carry over from the RX1R II.
With the same 61MP full-frame back-side illuminated sensor as Sony’s A7R V and A7C R, the RX1R III also boasts the latest Bionz XR processor, all packed into the same shape as the RX1R II while retaining that camera’s fixed 35mm f/2 Zeiss lens. Sony says that the RX1R III’s lens and sensor are aligned at the ‘micron level’ for the best optical performance, and the camera’s ‘Step Crop’ modes offer focal lengths achieved via digital cropping: 50mm (with a resolution of 29MP) and 70mm (15MP). These digital focal lengths can also be adjusted later when shooting raw files, and the built-in lens has a macro mode that allows close-ups to be shot at a magnification of 0.26x. Powered by Sony’s AI autofocus processor and 693-point phase detect AF system, the RX1R III can detect and track “people, insects, trains, and much more.” Maximising the low-light potential of its full-frame sensor, the RX1R III has an ISO range of 100-32000 and can capture a claimed 15 stops of dynamic range. While pitched as a stills camera, its video specs include 10-bit 4K 30p, 8-bit FullHD 120fps, Slow & Quick, S-Cinetone and User LUTs.
