Photographer Claire Gillo shares her best tips, from shooting in low light to investing in the right lens

What close-up lens?
I love macro photography and spending time outside. With my photography I’ll shoot anything natural, from close-up flowers in the summer to frosty leaves in the winter. This year my aim was to take my photography more seriously, and as a starting point I want to make gift cards from my images to sell. I’d like to invest in a macro lens, but I am very confused where to start as I’m not technically minded. Any advice?

When it comes to purchasing a lens, as much as you can afford is the answer. The higher the quality of glass the better, but before you go investing thousands of pounds you can’t afford, remember that there are alternative and cheaper options (such as reversing rings for super closeup macro if you’re on a very tight budget).
