Laura reflects on her journey towards a vaginismus diagnosis
I was 13 years old when my peers were going wild raving about that sex scene from Black Swan between Mila Kunis and Natalie Portman (the former of which was my biggest secret crush at the time). I wouldn’t see the film in totality until I was in college, but my hormone-fuelled classmates found a way to spread said scene around. This was the first time I remember seeing female/female sex onscreen and I was totally captivated, flustered and, to be honest, a little spooked as I didn’t understand the context of the psychological thriller.
I’ve always been interested in the portrayal of sex onscreen and how this has changed over the years, especially when it comes to sapphic and queer sex. I find it fascinating to see how mainstream media’s portrayal of LGBTQIA sex has evolved over the years, as well as what it tells us about what has become more normalised and what is still stigmatised in our society with regards to queer life in general, and our love and dating lives.
This is why I launched the DIVA onscreen sapphic/queer love scenes survey. And our readers sure didn’t disappoint – you had a lot to say. I wasn’t surprised to see that for a number of you Black Swan was also your introduction to f/f sex onscreen, but many of you had very different first times.
