Enter: Kokomo City
A beautiful documentary on the variability of Black transfemme experiences
BY KRYSTA MCKENZIE
Interior, a young queer’s bedroom, night. Enter: Kokomo City. She tells the young queer stories of Black transfemme personhood, survival and the joy in community. Her vulnerability and openness takes root in this young queer’s heart and shows them a world where their life has importance.
Upcoming documentary Kokomo City comes from the wonderfully talented D. Smith, a Black trans woman who knew that the authentic experiences of her community needed to be shared, and she had to be the one to do it. She is a successful producer, singer and songwriter, and has achieved two Grammy nominations for her work. Kokomo City is her film debut as a director, and what an exceptional debut it is.
