This Barbie is... Alexandra Shipp
The actor and singer talks to DIVA about how Greta Gerwig’s latest movie is changing the world
Serving up queer cottagecore realness in Hayley Kiyoko, AKA Lesbian Jesus’, music video. Donning a cape and kicking ass as The X-Men’s Storm. Sharing a screen with Andrew Garfield and Vanessa Hudgens in Lin-Manuel Miranda’s Tick, Tick… BOOM! These are just some of the versatile roles Alexandra Shipp has portrayed that have made her a certified DIVA favourite. Like many, we were thrilled when it was announced that she would be joined by other openly LGBTQIA actors Kate McKinnon, Hari Nef and Scott Evans in portraying their own Barbies and Kens in Greta Gerwig’s Barbie film. Talk about #HotGaySummer.

I’m only seconds into our Zoom call ahead of the film’s release when I find myself in awe of how infectious Alexandra’s vibe is. She’s cool (and not just because she’s dyed her eyebrows hot pink) and grounded, while also being enthusiastic and warm. It feels like I’m catching brunch with a friend to gush about all things Barbie. When I ask how she’d describe her Barbie, she approaches it from it a queer lens.
