Speak up against conversion practices
JAYNE OZANNE calls on us all to support the Ban Conversion Therapy campaign
JAYNE OZANNE
“Does it really still happen in the UK?” “Isn’t it banned yet?” “Surely it doesn’t affect that many LGBTQI+ people?” I can guarantee you that when I’m speaking to someo about these horrific practices that we call “conversion therapy”, at least one, if not all, of these questions will come up.
By the way, though, it’s definitely not “therapy”! As I myself can testify, it can leave you suicidal and in need of lifelong therapy to deal with the trauma it causes. And whilst it may seek to “convert” your sexual orientation or gender identity into something that is perceived as “normal”, it fails. A far better term, which we are now encouraging people to use, is “conversion practices”.
