DIVA Meets
Mal Glowenke
The “Mayor of Lesbians” CHATS TO EMILY WARNER about Pride, politics and her must-listen podcast, Made It Out
Mal Glowenke swings gracefully into the front seat of her car, adjusts her cat-eye sunglasses, and props her phone against the steering wheel. “Sorry, I have to take this meeting from my car,” she says. “It’s kind of a busy day – I’ve been rushing around running errands.” You wouldn’t know it from her flawless makeup, white linen shirt and miraculously coiffed bangs – an outfit curated to exude effortless chic.
Mal was born to be in the public eye. “My favourite thing to do as a little girl was play dress-up and perform. I always wanted to be Britney Spears,” she tells me. Yet growing up in Texan suburbia, she never expected to be a lesbian influencer and podcaster, recently nominated for a GLAAD Award.
Describing the awards ceremony, she says, “We took our 12 best friends, who have all been on the podcast, and just had fun. It was an absolute honour to be nominated, and to be in a room with people who are making such change in the world.”
