Chibnall to take over from Moffat as next showrunner

The BBC has announced that Chris Chibnall will take over from Steven Moffat as head writer and executive producer of Doctor Who from the series after next. Steven’s final series will air on BBC One in spring 2017, following a new Christmas Special for 2016. Chris Chibnall’s first series will then début in 2018.

Steven says, “It feels odd to be talking about leaving when I’m just starting work on scripts for the new series, but the fact is, my timey-wimey is running out. While Chris is doing his last run of Broadchurch, I’ll be finishing up on the best job in the universe and keeping the TARDIS warm for him. It took a lot of gin and tonic to talk him into this, but I’m beyond delighted that one of the true stars of British TV drama will take the Time Lord further into the future. Chris will soon become the new showrunner of Doctor Who... and I will be thrown in a skip.”

Success! Chris Chibnall collects the Sky Arts Awards for his crime drama Broadchurch.
