THE SHAKESPEARE CODE
Southwark, 1599 – where the hideous Carrionites are manipulating William Shakespeare using the powers of witchcraft…

Dress Rehearsal
Elements from three of the 2007 season’s adventures were originally rehearsed in spin-off fictions by their authors, with The Shakespeare Code drawing slightly on writer Gareth Roberts’ Doctor Who Magazine comic strip A Groatsworth of Wit (issues 363-364, published 2005 – see below).
The focus was shifted from the forgotten playwright Robert Greene’s resentment of his upstart rival William Shakespeare, but certain similarities remained: an Elizabethan scrivener coming under the influence of magical alien beings (one named ‘Bloodfinger’, as opposed to ‘Bloodtide’ and ‘Doomfinger’), Shakespeare lusting after the Doctor’s companion and comparing her to a summer’s day, and the wouldbe globe conquerors at last banished during a performance at a Southwark theatre.
