Before your first shift behind the till at Repeater Records, you’re regaled with a tale of how fictional pop foursome Becoming Violet split up. It’s got the lot: sibling betrayal, a hit solo album, a love triangle, a frontwoman disappearing from the public eye. Only that apparent recluse, Morgan MacIntyre, is now standing right in front of you, explaining that this is less a job than a calling. “A new record can become a gateway to new love and connection,” she tells you. It’s your responsibility, then, to open up that gateway by recommending the right piece of vinyl to each customer.
If Wax Heads begins with a story of acrimony, its creation was congenial from the start. Both Murray Somerwolff and Rocío Tomé González graduated from the Astra Games fellowship, with Somerwolff using the grant money to fund an early prototype. When making a game in Unity became significantly less appealing last year, he sought a development partner with experience using Godot. A mutual friend recommended González and the pair quickly hit it off. “It’s been the best working partnership I’ve had,” he says. “The art was amazing, the concept was amazing,” she adds. “I didn’t exchange a word with him before we started working together, but in these first months we’ve been so [creatively] aligned.”
