Sonokuni
While the majority of the game is viewed top-down, narrative intermission sections are presented side-on, with pixel art that – in true hip-hop style – samples from a variety of styles and sources, with eye-opening results
There are two ways of approaching Sonokuni: as a post-Hotline Miami action game, pushing the scuzzy visuals and twitchy combat further still, or as a kind of interactive visual album from Japanese rap-group-turned-game-developer Don Yasa Crew. You probably know instinctively which of those is more appealing – and that preference is, in turn, likely to define how much you enjoy it.
