The late-March release of Nintendo’s news app felt like smart timing, with the big Switch 2 presentation on April 2 and live events to follow – the app’s calendar tracking them all. In the runup, though, its main focus, a daily info feed, has been sparse: the top ‘news’ story each day a countdown to the presentation itself, only padded out by a release date announcement for the Zelda movie (all of two years away), the world’s shortest game guide to Super Mario Bros’ World 1 – did you know there’s a level warp? – and assorted scraps of concept and cover art. Also sparse is your choice of background theme, with only five on offer: Mario, Zelda, Animal Crossing, Pikmin and Splatoon. Surely that roster will expand in time, and there should be more to justify daily check-ins once the new console looms.
