ONE DAY IN 1981, the power in Burbank, Los Angeles, abruptly went out. The source of the brownout was a mystery, until the electric company traced the surge to an address on South Buena Vista Street. It was Walt Disney Studios — specifically the soundstage where a movie titled Tron was being assembled. And so peculiar was the way this story was being brought to life, with vast amounts of lighting flooding the sets to aid a newfangled digital process, that it temporarily darkened large swathes of a city.
