‘AMERICA’
WEST SIDE STORY(1961/2021)
West Side Story was Stephen Sondheim’s first produced gig as a lyricist and, in ‘America’, his genius is fully formed. A verbal tennis match between Puerto Rican girls and boys about the merits of living in America, it has many of the hallmarks of his subsequent work: smart, funny, grown-up. Sondheim’s lyrical dexterity is a major reason the number works so well, be it in the Robert Wise/Jerome Robbins’ rooftop version or Steven Spielberg ’s streetset reinvention.
