WORDS HAYLEY CAMPBELL
Top to bottom: Aatami (Jorma Tommila) is going great guns;
LAST TIME EMPIRE spoke to writer-director Jalmari Helander, he was fresh out of ideas for how to kill Nazis. He had used them all up in 2022’s surprise hit Sisu, his film set in the last desperate days of World War II, when Nazis were in retreat from northern Finland, destroying everything and everyone in their path. Until they met Aatami (Jorma Tommila), a lone Finnish prospector who simply refused to die. With his imminent sequel Sisu: Road To Revenge, however, Helander has found a way to cook up more creative kills. “I changed the Nazis to different bad guys!” he grins. “So, I somehow found a lot of cool ways again. I don’t know why my brain is good at thinking of something like that, but that’s my superpower.”
